“With the season going well so far there is a
good vibe about the club and a real enthusiasm
to do well. We see our youth section as the key
to the future of the club. We took the decision in
2009 to re-launch our colts under the leadership of
Dave Forrest. We were awarded ECB Clubmark
Accreditation in 2010 and identified as a Focus
Club by Berkshire Cricket. We have around 70 80 youngsters training every week with six ECB
qualified coaches. We have a number of them
involved in the county structure, which is good for
a club of our size.
“We have taken a decision this season to
reserve places in our 2nd XI for up to four colts,
enabling them to experience league cricket under
the guidance of senior players, taking an active
part as batsmen and/or bowlers, not just making
up the numbers.
“This is proving to be very successful with the
youngsters making significant contributions to
our success on the field. We are also organising
development matches against other local clubs,
where six to seven colts play with a handful of
senior players as a way to help the youngsters
bridge the gap between 20/20 cricket and 100 over
league cricket.
“The cricket club is a focal point for the
village and surrounding areas, providing a vital
sporting facility for boys and girls of all abilities.
We consider our ground to be one of the best in
the area, with an excellent groundsman and have
recently invested in covers, which are already
making a difference. We regularly host Berks
Over 60s and colts representative matches. We are
particularly proud of our teas which go down well
with visiting teams.
“The biggest challenge all clubs face is the
dwindling number of senior players. Over the
coming years we aim to increase our membership,
for both league sides to gain promotion and bring
more of our young players into adult cricket.”
