CRICKET CLUB
H
imley CC is terrific
example of a community
club that offers cricket
to everybody and have
been making fantastic progress in
recent times particularly in terms of
developing young players. Chairman
Gordon Lewis took the time to tell us
more.
Involvement
He told us, “I’ve been with the club
for 45 years I think. I’ve thoroughly
enjoyed my involvement here having
been brought up with the club since I
was a child. I’ve been Chairman the last
twenty years and the biggest challenge
these days is keeping people playing
cricket.
The most rewarding thing for me has
got to be the way in which the junior
section has developed in recent
times which is great to see.
That and the development
of our facilities which our
Committee has worked
hard on to achieve,
we’ve always looked to
progress in this regard
year on year.”
Positive
“I would say the
atmosphere at the club
at the moment is fantastic
with our U15 side having
just won the national knock out
competition. That’s a team that
Chad Brandrick from Himley stunned teammates when he
claimed five wickets in five balls to bowl his side to victory.
Aged 15, he is part of a Himley cricketing family with both his
father and grandfather serving as first XI captain at the club.
And the teenager, who attends St Peter’s School in
Wolverhampton, is now targeting his own place in the first
team after his inspired spell of off-spin blew away Wightwick in
a recent under-15s match.
Chad, who captains the under-15s, finished the match with
impressive figures of 6-13. Father Carl was a first team skipper
and grandfather Joe, a former Albion director, is the current
club president and former captain.
Carl said, “This was a great achievement for a lad who works
really hard at his cricket. I have been playing cricket for 40-odd
years and I’ve never seen it done. “I’ve seen four wickets in four
balls but never five in five, so this is fairly unique.”
Chad, who is an opening batsman, also represents
Worcestershire at under-15 level and scored his first century
for the county earlier this season. He is now aiming to push for
a spot in Himley’s first XI, who play in the Birmingham League
First Division.
