Alvechurch & Hopwood “I’ve loved cricket since I was a child and when we moved into Alvechurch in the late 90’s it was inevitable that we would gravitate to the club. When my 2 sons also showed an interest I qualified as a coach and got more involved, and the Club has become a pretty significant part of my life - Cricket clubs are a great place to make good friends. “I’m much better the other side of the bar; and know that along with many of the volunteers that make the club work, you do the best you can amongst juggling your family and work commitments. You do get a lot of satisfaction from knowing that the club has hosted a really good party and that people want to come back. “There’s a sense of pride that the club (and 20 volunteers) helped a major community event on Sunday 3rd May become a major success. The day actually produced a successful world record… operation teddy bear, and saw over 2500 people visiting the club during the day and evening’s entertainment. “Being located in the centre of the village is a major plus, but with that comes the fact that we are very constrained for land…we would love more space for spectators when games are taking place. We try and upgrade the facility each year and will shortly be having our driveway lit, which will make a big difference to making our entrance more welcoming. “Like most sports club there’s lots of improvements we would like to make, and certainly we know we have to be commercially aware for a sustainable future and good corporate sponsors are a vital part of this, along with ensuring more use is made of the facilities, especially in the close season. We have good relationships with other sports clubs and are exploring ways we can all benefit from working together. “We have a number of daytime users, with a diverse range of groups, such as a theatre group, morris dancers, local PTA meetings and other community groups. We have regular functions which include children’s birthdays, landmark birthday bashes, christenings, wedding receptions and we play an important role in the largest community day of the year, the annual picnic in the park. “We have the cheapest bar in the village and our prices for hiring the venue will be hard to beat - after all we want to get the venue used more.” Club Representative, Pete Gwilliam Anyone interested in booking the venue should contact Pete on 07960 550884.
