success of Lashings. They may be superstars but they never
act like them, the ethos is never refuse an autograph, always
pose for selfies.
“And we’ll play cricket at places the county circuit has
ignored and neglected. International cricket is concentrated
on a handful of venues and there are huge swathes of the
country that are over an hour’s drive from even a county
venue. We’re very popular in are as like the West of England
and Lincolnshire.
“2014 went phenomenally well, given that we didn’t lose
a single match, although Eastbourne and Brentwood both
pushed us very close. We were hoping to go unbeaten again but
lost to Eastbourne early on. The players like the close games,
but the chairman would prefer it if we had fewer alarms!
“One of the biggest challnges we face now is that signing
‘galacticos’ isn’t as straightforward as it used to be because of
the staggering sums of money cricketers can now make, well
into their late thirties and early forties, playing T20 cricket.
Signing Grant Elliott will is a nice addition for us. It’s not as if
we had a week batting order but let’s say he will add a bit of
youthful vigour...”
“Our ambition is to spreading the gospel. Really we’d like
to keep doing what we’re doing, although we’d also like to
play a few more football games as well. A visit from Lashings
can be the biggest event in a club’s history. Cricket fans get the
chance to meet their heroes, talk with them and even drink
with them. There are men of a certain age who idolised players
like Gordon Greenidge and we give them the chance to meet
their idols.”
