The club was a founder member of the York and District League and made the move to their current ground inside the racecourse in around 1860. The club was able to celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2001 with a fixture against an MCC XI as well as an Anniversary Dinner and Dance. The event was held in a large marquee at the ground with approximately 365 guests in attendance made up of past and present members as well as guests. At present they play their home games on Newsham Road in Yorkshire and compete in Division 2 (North) of the Yorkshire and District Senior Cricket Lea gue. They are led by Chairman George Gifford who is supported by Secretary Ken Major and the club has made a considerable amount of progress under their guidance. Their first team has put together a steady if unspectacular first half to their campaign, having compiled a record of two wins, four draws and three defeats from their first eleven matches with the other two being abandoned. This sees them in the bottom half of the table with 144 points on the board. The team will now be looking to put together a good run of form in order to finish as high up the table as possible. As long as they can keep their current group of players together they should be in with a good chance of doing just that. Thirsk is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section and this is reflected by the fact that they also have a number of youth sides in place. These teams look to provide youngsters from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment. It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this P DAWSON & SON B U I L D I N G & J O I N E RY C O NTRACTO R S New Builds • Extensions Renovations • Joinery Windows • Staircases Plastering • Roofing • Kitchens Tel: 01845 522360 Mob: 07894 450617 “The club was able to celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2001 with a fixture against an MCC XI as well as an Anniversary Dinner and Dance.” E-mail: [email protected] 30 Issue 41 Thirsk Club Info - www.thirskcricket.co.uk - Twitter : @ThirskCC - Founded in 1851
