Norwich FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/CRICKETCLUBMAG Norwich CRICKET CLUB W hile officially formed in 1999, Norwich CC is actually made up of two different teams (Ingham and District Cricket Club and Norwich Barleycorns Cricket Club) that merged with long-term goals involving resources and players in mind. Certainly it proved to be a good move, since a mere eighteen months later they won the East Anglian Premier League Trophy, the Bob Carter Challenge Cup and the Bennett’s Floodlit Challenge Trophy (that’s just the men!) with the ladies adding their win in the Norfolk and Suffolk Marsh Ladies League to the tally. There is a lot of history in each of the separate merged teams. Ingham was founded in 1895 and has the solid foundations. They have hosted numerous benefit matches throughout the 1960s and 1970s with a number of the world’s top cricketers taking part and the Norfolk Alliance title has been theirs six times between 1975 and 1994. On the other side, Norwich Barleycorns is actually comprised of three amalgamated teams – the Norwich Cavaliers (founded 1964), St Barnabas (1924) and Barleycorns (1946). They all came together in 1985 because they all lacked a ground with longterm security. Since then they played at Postwick, the ground St Barnabas were previously using. There are five adult teams – 3 men, 1 ladies and a Sunday league – as well as several junior teams. Their junior section is one of the standout features at the club with a number of sides in place. These teams look to provide youngsters from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any side to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their young players can develop over the coming years. Competing in the East Anglian Premier Cricket League their first team put together a record of 9 wins, 3 draws and 6 defeats from their 20 league matches with their other 2 fixtures ending in draws. This saw them finish in 3rd place in the table with 352 points on the board. This should provide them with the perfect platform from which to build as they look ahead towards their 2015 campaign.
