CRICKET CLUB
Brockhampton CC is a fine example of the important role that a club can
play in their local community. Cricket Club Magazine recently caught
up with Club Chairman Royston Wargen to find more about how the
club has been getting along lately.
Involvement The Role
Royston told us, “I have been involved with
Brockhampton Cricket Club for 45 years. It all begun in
1974. I was doing my paper run one evening and a local
farmer stopped me on the street and asked briskly: “Are
your Roy Wargen?” Wary of the situation and the fact
he could mistake me for some local prankster, I was not
sure what to answer but ... “Yes.” In a booming voice he
replied: “Good. You are playing for Brock on Saturday.
Make sure you’re there on time.”
On that same Saturday I fell in love with the game,
the people at Brockhampton and the most beautiful
cricket ground I’ve ever seen. Several years later I’m the
proud Chairman of this unique club. Each year we rise
to the challenge of ensuring the running of the club and
grounds is as successful as we hope to be on the pitch.” “The most challenging aspect of my role as chairman
is the continued drive needed to keep the club buoyant
and successful, this has become more difficult over the
years as other interests have come into play, giving more
choices for weekend activities.
We are very lucky at Brockhampton to have our
cricket grounds set in one of the most stunning locations
in Herefordshire, a lot of my time is spent working on
our grounds, whilst this is hard work, I do find this
very rewarding once everything is accomplished and
in place for the weekend games ahead. One of the most
rewarding parts is seeing people enjoy themselves at
Brockhampton whatever the occasion and for players to
achieve individual and team targets.”
