CRICKET CLUB
Southwell CC is a fine example of the progress that a club can make with
a strong team in place behind the scenes. Cricket Club Magazine recently
caught up with their Chairman Chris Miller to find out more about how
they have been getting along lately.
Chris told us, “I have been
involved with Southwell for a total
of ten years. I previously played for
another club in the same league.
My attraction to the club was
simple, firstly I moved to Southwell
and the previous club was a fair
distance away. It made sense to
join Southwell. Secondly, having
played against them for a number
of years I had made a lot of friends
from Southwell so it was the obvious
choice. Thirdly, they were playing
the same standard as my previous
club.”
“At the moment the most
challenging role as chairman is
ensuring we have a secure future.
I am pleased that having become
chairman two years ago, we have
increased our financial status which
has enabled us to purchase new
equipment.
“I am also a coach and two years
ago we made a concerted effort to
increase the junior section. This
has been a tremendous success
and it is really rewarding to see so
many children getting into cricket
and thoroughly enjoying their
experience.
“The committee is extremely
enthusiastic about the continued
60 Issue 50
growth and success of the club.
Although on the playing side we
are going through leaner times, the
mood within the players has still
remained a positive one and all age
groups enjoy a fantastic relationship.
“In the off season the committee
meet every month and there has
been a lot of positive suggestions
and results with regard to finances
and the general upkeep of the club.
Winter nets have been well attended
by all age groups.
“Plans for 2019 include a
complete outfield drainage system
which is being installed at the end
of the season. We have Nottingham
Trent University to thank for
this. This was one of a number of
items provided by the university.
We intend to hold a six a side
competition on the August bank
holiday. This will also incorporate
a donkey dump competition. The
day is aimed at the local community
becoming involved. The teams will
consist of local pubs etc. Finally, the
