Winsley CC is a fine example of a club that is building for the future
by working hard to develop a successful youth set up. Cricket
Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Niall
Macdougall to find out more.
He told us, “My son came up
to the club aged five and I was a
lapsed cricketer; ten years later I
am chairman and he is in the 1st
team. I am enjoying my cricket and
coaching and get a great deal of
pleasure seeing the youngsters grow
and develop. My place in the 3rds is
now under threat!”
“Cricket is suffering from the
lack of exposure on TV and the
media generally so it is hard to keep
youngsters interested when they
reach 13 plus and we need to renew
our players as priorities change
with work and families. We hope to
attract around six players from our
youth section into our senior teams
each year and we are managing
this. It is a huge reward to see the
youngsters thrive and grow and
enjoy the game.”
“The atmosphere at the club is
very positive; we are enjoying our
season, we are attracting players
and looking forward to the World
Cup. We are a community club and
there is a family atmosphere at the
moment.
