CRICKET CLUB
Shipston on Stour CC is a fantastic example of the important role
that a cricket club can play in its local community. Cricket Club
Magazine recently caught up with their Secretary Danny Murphy
to find out more about how they have been getting along lately.
Atmosphere
Danny told us, “The general
mood down at the club is buoyant.
We have two senior Saturday teams
that operate in the Cotswold Hills
League, the 1st XI led by captain
Tom Cox are in the Premier Division
and traditionally challenge for the
League title, the last success coming
in 2014. The 2nd XI under the
leadership of Matthew Pratt operate
in the third division which gives
36 Issue 50
means we can blood young players
at a decent level.
However, the main cause for
optimism is the Junior section. This
has taken off in the last three years
to a point where we regularly get
more than seventy children at the
club on our Friday night Junior
sessions. We also have several
youngsters who have been involved
with the Warwickshire academy
system which is a great boost for
everybody.”
The Off-Season
“The off season has gone well for
the club. The club committee which
has largely been in place under the
leadership of Gary Betteridge’s
chairmanship for three years has
been busily putting plans together
to take the club forward. A month of
preseason net sessions has put both
teams in decent shape for the start
of the league season and we have
managed to recruit some new players
to supplement our two squads.”
