Detorakis, Convention Co-Chairperson; Demetri Kountis, Akron Cretan Association President Special Re around the world this year, 100 dancers joined to dance the “sygano” and in “spirit” Eleftherios Venizelos, as portrayed by Dr. John Nathenas of New York, led the line of dancers. President John Manos expressed his gratitude to the Akron Cretan Association for hosting the convention. Together with his wife Elena, President Manos thanked his board for their service during his presidency. He also recognized all current and new Great Benefactors of the PAA and presented special outstanding achievement awards to selected members of his board. The PYA Dance Group from San Francisco performed and then music and dancing continued throughout the evening. The PAA business meetings of the convention concluded Thursday afternoon. On this day, the PAA voted on bylaws and resolutions. Cretan hospitality continued during Farewell Night. The traditional “glendi,” along with the swearing-in ceremony of the new PAA and PYA Boards, was held at the Greek Community Center. His Eminence Archbishop Eirineos, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Crete, offered as a gift to the PAA a bible translated into Modern Greek, which was (and will be going forward) used to administer the oath of office. Newly elected PAA President John Sargetis, thanked all who volunteered, supported and attended the 43rd Biennial Convention. Newly elected PYA President Katerina Makridakis thanked the outgoing PYA President Christos Marangoudakis and introduced the new PYA board. Newly elected Women’s Executive Director Zaharoula Marmatakis congratulated the organizing committees, the Akron chapter, all the volunteers and everyone who attended the convention. Noula Kountis thanked the Akron Executive Committee members, the members of the Akron Cretan Association, sponsors, former District 3 Governor Stelios Vitakis, and newly elected District 3 Governor Maria Vamvakis. Special thanks were extended to the George Varouh Cretan Club of Cleveland, the Knossos Chapter of Canton, Ohio, the Evangelos Peroulakis/Mikis Theodorakis Association of Youngstown-Warren Chapter, and the Pittsburgh Arkadi-Maleme Chapter for the pastries and baked goods provided each morning for the business meetings and delegates. Special recognition was given to John Feotis, Steve Saviolis, Lee Kipper, Liberty Spataro and Kostas Stamatakis who, as young children, attended the 1938 Sixth National Convention hosted in Akron, Ohio.
