the Cretan struggle for freedom on its journey to unification with Greece.
Our upcoming December/January issue of KPHTH
Magazine will highlight the centennial events of PAA
chapters nationwide. In addition, the digital version of
this issue will include videos and links of the celebrations’ events. So members, please submit your images
and stories of your centennial events early.
The PAA has long believed that recognizing the
achievements of Hellenism throughout the world is
not only noble but necessary and exemplary. For these
reasons, the PAA established the Venizelos and Kazantzakis Awards in honor of
two historical giants of
their respective times.
The Venizelos Award is
named after the father of
modern Greece and the
great global statesman,
Eleftherios
Venizelos.
Highly regarded and
loved, Eleftherios Venizelos was declared Honorary President of the
Pancretan Association of
Eleftherios Venizelos
America during his historic visit to the United States, a
title that he held until his death.
The Venizelos Award is given to an individual who has
demonstrated exemplary values, outstanding achievements and has made valuable contributions in the fields
of government, politics, diplomacy or civil service. Candidates in related fields of endeavor may also be considered. Qualified candidates may be of non-Greek ancestry,
and may be citizens or residents of any country, however,
these individuals must have a high public profile, and
through words and deeds, have shown to be true friends
of Greece and its people (Philhellenes).
The first Venizelos Award was given to the Honorable Michael Dukakis. Other Venizelos Award recipients included
the Honorable Constantine Mitsotakis and the Honorable
Karolos Papoulias.
The Kazantzakis Award
is named after the world
renowned author, poet
and philosopher, Nikos
Kazantzakis.
The Kazantzakis Award
is given to an individual
who has made valuable
and notable contributions
and has achieved prominence, or is a staunch

literature, poetry, the arts
and letters, or the academe. Candidates in related fields of
endeavor may also be considered. Qualified candidates may
be of Greek or non-Greek ancestry, and may be citizens or
residents of any country. However, preference will be given
to individuals of high visibility and status, and whose work
includes and promotes Greece, its people or its history.
The first Kazantzakis Award was given to Professor Vassilis Lambropoulos. Other Kazantzakis Award recipients
included Mr. Angelo K. Tsakopoulos.
