UNC System Minimum Admission Requirements
Individual constituent institutions may require other courses in addition to the minimum requirements. All applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA, with an 800( Critical Reading and Math) on the SAT or a 17 on the ACT.
Six course units in Language, including:
• Four units in English emphasizing grammar, composition, and literature, and
• Two units of a Language other than English.
Four course units of Mathematics, in any of the following combinations:
• Math I, Math II, Math III and one unit beyond Math III,
• Math I, Math II, Math III and two units beyond Math III, or( The 4th unit of Math affects applicants to all institutions except the North Carolina School of Arts.) It is recommended that prospective students take a Mathematics course unit in the 12th grade.
Three course units in Science, including:
• At least one unit in a life or Biological Science( for example, Biology),
• At least one unit in Physical Science( for example, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, and
• At least one Laboratory Course.
Two course units in Social Studies, including one unit in U. S. History, but an applicant who does not have the unit in U. S. History may be admitted on the condition that at least three semester hours in that subject will be passed by the end of the sophomore year.
One course unit as defined in those requirements may include those high school-level courses taken and passed by an applicant after graduating from high school, as well as those taken while enrolled as a high school student.
Requirements for private colleges vary from institution to institution. In general private colleges require a college preparatory course of study that includes math through Algebra II and some foreign language study. Some institutions require a much more rigorous of study than others.

Additional Learning Opportunities
Non-Traditional Instructional Settings Cleveland County students can take courses through a variety of non-traditional settings. A non-traditional setting is defined as outside the face-to-face traditional setting of a high school classroom. ALL requests for course completion through a non traditional setting require prior approval from the school principal.
Summer School Summer Credit Recovery classes are offered at Cleveland County high schools. High school students who have failed to successfully complete the number of units in core courses( English, Math, Science, Social Studies) required for promotion to the next grade level or for graduation are eligible for summer school at their home school. The exact courses to be taught will depend upon student need and computer access.
North Carolina Virtual Public High School( NCVPS) North Carolina Virtual Public School offers a wide variety of high school courses. Students may elect to take courses that are not at their high school in an area of their interest, or they may use these course offerings to recover credits and take courses outside of the regular day depending on availability and approval. A list of offerings is available at www. ncvps. org. Students must meet with the high school counselor in order to register for courses through NCVPS.
