Exaerete
The genus Exaerete contains
seven large species (18-28mm).
The body shape of Exaerete
resembles that of Aglae, but they
have a characteristic metallic
green colour 20 . In entomological
collections they acquire a bluish
tone to the naked eye. In this
genus, the hind tibia are longer

especies de gran tamaño (18-
28mm). Exaerete se parece en la
forma de su cuerpo a Aglae, pero
son de un color verde metálico
característico 20 , sin embargo, en
las colecciones entomológicas
adquieren un tono azulino a simple
vista. En este género, la tibia trasera
es más larga que ancha, mientras
que otros géneros tienen tibias con
formas más anchas y redondeadas.

Distinct species can be
differentiated using the shape

head. Like Aglae caerulea,
these bees also use Eulaema and
Euphasea species nests, removing
their eggs, and replacing them with
their own eggs in the nest cells,
along with the pollen collected by
the owner. Afterwards, they reseal
the cell so that the host does not
notice the change 21 . Exaerete larvae
thus receive food and protection,
without further investment by
the parents.
Como Aglae caerulea estas abejas
también usan los nidos de especies
de Eulaema y Eufriesea, quitando
los huevos depositados por estas,
y reemplazándolos con sus propios
huevos en las celdas del nido,
junto con el polen colectado por el
dueño. Después, cierran la celda
de nuevo para que el huésped no
note el cambio 21 . Así las larvas
de Exaerete reciben comida y
protección, sin más inversión por
parte de los padres.
