Unified sports - Abby Fostveit, Bailey Birmingham, & Jelissa Torres
The Unified Sports program, sponsored by the Special Olympics, brings youth with and without disabilities together on the same court, field, and pitch. This is so anyone and everyone can have an equal chance at playing games and having fun.
We had a chance to sit down and talk with Ms. Foster, the coach of the Silver Creek team, Mr. Schuyler, the athletic director, and some of the Silver Creek basketball team players.
Starting off with athletic director, Mr. Schuyler, we got to learn that he is passionate about the program, and it really shows through his interview. After speaking with Mr. Schuyler we got more of an insight on the program and its purpose. This year the school district took an approach so all of the district high schools would have teams. Students from Niwot, Lyons, and Silver Creek all are apart of this program with their own teams. As the athletic director, Mr. Schuyler is involved in finding coaches, sites for games, figuring out game times, and always making sure the students are having fun. Along with basketball, Mr. Schuyler is hoping to expand the program to other sports as well. “Then hopefully we’ll have a soccer team in the Spring, and then hopefully have a flag football team this Fall.” He puts in his own time and energy into the program by driving players’ bus to their game. Just like many others involved, Mr. Schuyler puts 100% into the program to make sure everyone is having the best time.
