Short Story: Swimmer
10
Ezra was an all-star swimmer, there was no distance he couldn’t conquer, no amount of water he couldn’t handle and no person he couldn’t beat until one day in late June he was unsure if he could win. The odds were against him and it seemed impossible. It was scorching hot and the moment you stepped outside with out sunscreen on you were fried. Ezra walked around looking at all the people in their swimsuits with towels around their waist. He was ready for today and he was going to beat the kid with red hair and lots of freckles. The talk of the week was that Mike Fresno was the cockiest swimmer in the whole state and he has called Ezra out to say he doesn’t care how fast he is he will beat Ezra. Ezra has hundreds of metals; he has won every swim meet he has ever competed in. He is so fast he has to staple his swim shorts to his skin, but it doesn’t hurt him. Ezra is a very special boy he can’t feel pain, literally, he has never once cried because of an injury. Ezra warms up by doing sprints, jumping jack, push ups and squats. Then he does a couple flips and summersaults.
This afternoon Ezra skips his warm ups because he cant find his stapler. Mike comes from around the corner and laughs asking him what in the heck is he looking for? Ezra soon realizes its sabotage and obviously Mike has everything to do with it.
Ezra says no big deal, there are other staplers and he can use them. He runs frantically out of the room asking all the life guard staff if they know were he can find a stapler. At the front desk the woman hands her stapler to him he goes to staple his shorts to his skin but the stapler is jammed. He has to swim soon and his shorts aren’t going to stay on. In a panic he calls his mom and she said she would go to the store so he met her there. When he got there he went to the office supply section and opened the stapler package. He started to staple but he was out of luck it was jammed as well. He started opening all of the packages but they were all stuck. He was frustrated and he was yelling when his mom arrived she had seen what he had done and asked what was the matter. He told her in a rush about how every stapler was jammed and not working.
