A few years ago my friend asked me to make a tactile card for her niece who had recently lost her sight. We had only just started to make cards so this was a big challenge for us.

After a lot of thinking about a design I decided on putting her name on a card using a different texture for each letter, I then looked online and worked out how to write her name in braille and used gems to do this.

It got me thinking that I would like to make more cards like this so that visually impaired people could enjoy our cards as much as sighted people.

I got in contact with a man who had lost his sight through having meningitis and he helped us by providing us with a braille labeller which prints raised dots onto clear tape, by using this we are able to put wording on our cards and then overlay it with the braille tape therefore ensuring that everyone can get pleasure from our cards.

We try to use as many different textures as we can and last year I made some christmas cards which had wooden tactile decorations attached so that once the festive season was finished the decoration could be put away and used year after year. I also did the same with some felt decorations.

Below are just a few of our creations.
