Artisans Fair Markets to Return
A shipping container by the
Canopy Bridge has received a
much-needed makeover in time
for the Artisans Fair Markets to
start this weekend.
Whangarei artist Jo May was
commissioned by event organiser
Jodie Hannam to create artwork
inspired by her local surroundings.
“Jo donated all of her artwork to
help promote the markets,” says
Jodie. “She is well-known for her
local artwork so we’re really lucky
to have her do this for us.”
She says she put out a call to
local artists earlier in the year, and
Jo jumped at the opportunity to
exhibit her outdoor paintings.
The paintings took six weeks to
complete and digitally print onto
aluminium sheets.
“I am so amazed with how it has
turned out,” Ms Hannam said.
“You can’t miss it, it’s beautiful.”
The panels on the revamped
shipping container have been
designed to be removed so that
art and text can be changed when
market details change.
The Artisans Fair Markets start
this Saturday, October 21 from
9-1.30 and continue every week
until January 28, then every
second Saturday until April 15.
Jodie took over organising the
markets 18 months ago. Last
summer they proved a huge
success, attracting more tourists
than ever before. This year, Jodie
says she is hoping to extend the
fair’s focus from art and crafts to
gourmet foods too.
