Whangarei Motorcycle Club
...The FORCE of the NORTH...
Back in the good old days of dirt roads, there were many around with bikes and the passion to race! Unfortunately there was nowhere for these ones to get together and share their passion. That was until in 1954 the Motorcycle club was started.
Ilene and Ivan Ace were two of the first on the clubs scene and also son, Shane Ace. Now the club has grown to as many as around 150 members.
The club is a place where ones who love to ride and race offroad, to bring their bikes and test their skills! As the now president Phil Causley put it, “find out how good you really are and put a level and edge on your riding. You go to the edge of your abilities and then beyond.”
Some of the tracks they use are Ruakaka Sandz Track, The Sands property, Browns property, Jubilee rd, Marua and a couple of different cross-country tracks.
At the events you will be put against ones your age, level and size. This way the bigger more experienced riders won’t be scaring or even getting stuck behind the little or less experienced.
The club has had its fair share of wins and trophies, (first one dating back to 1954) some of which are on display at Yamaha Whangarei. Top level riders have competed all around the country. Eric Anderson, aged 74 has been a club member for more than 35 years. He has now moved onto
road bikes, although not before winning some club trophies. Eric’s son Craig is also a club member and in his day was the 2 Wheeler Champ!
“I was riding, eldest boy was riding, daughter, Craig, all together riding on the weekends. I knew where my kids were and we did something together,” says Eric, “Many families do that, it’s a real family event and club. That’s what I think is the best thing about it.”
The Motorcycle club allows all ages to join, some are only 4 years old. ‘It gives them driving skills and safety knowledge at a young age.” Says Phil. “Those kids are unbelievable,” says Eric.
The club also comes under MNZ which allows its members, who when they sign up fill out a MNZ application, to compete in championships. When events are organized by the club they apply to MNZ beforehand and this covers public liability.
On Friday 18th August the club will be holding it’s Prizegiving @Old Boys Rugby Club rooms. Doors will be open at 6pm and all are invited. If you have been wanting to get involved in the club this is a good time to check them out.
If you would like to become a member of the Motorcycle club application forms are online at Whangarei Motorcycle Club.
