Picnics Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved summer for the fact of having picnics. When I was young, my mom would let me help her pick out snacks and treats for our outdoor dining experience, I’d pack the picnic basket and blankets, and we’d head to our local park for a different spin on lunch or dinner. This is a perfect time get your children invested in packing fun and healthy snacks (who wants to eat heavy on a hot summer day?) while learning to relax and enjoy without a “scheduled” activity. Bike Rides If we were playing word association, and you said the word “summer” to me, I would instantly respond with “bike rides” because this is what my summers as a child were all about. From tricycle age on up, my mother and I would always get out on our bicycles after dinner, to enjoy whatever was left of our day. Now that my daughter is on her trike, we have made it a habit to take a ride around the block or neighborhood befor e bath time. Not only is this a fun bonding experience to share in the more traditional sense, it gives us both a chance to get what’s left of our energy out before calling it quits for the day. The Three F’s. Fireflies, fireworks, and fun! Nighttime in summer is so much fun – and what’s better, bedtime always ends up getting pushed back for one reason or another. As simple as it sounds, taking a step out into your backyard in the evening hours once the sun begins to set with your little ones is a great way to get your summertime fill of goodness. Observe the electric glow of fireflies, feast your eyes on the sky for some holiday-related fireworks, or let the fun from the day continue way into the night – the choices are endless, it’s SUMMER after all! 34
