Overpopulation and rapid urbanisation are transforming our cities into urban heat islands . Super cool materials and other heat-mitigation strategies reduce the energy needed for cooling , decreasing carbondioxide emissions that deteriorate air quality . The benefits are shared across the global population , particularly aiding low-socio economic communities , as well as supporting industry and government , through the development of new markets , energy saving and informed urban planning , says Mat Santamouris .
