He partnered on Nanoscape , a data-driven 3D real-time interactive virtual cell environment , with computer artists , experts in computer graphics and cell biologists . Users can explore and interact with activity ( proteins and cellular processes ) on the surface of a cancer cell in real time . The immersive platform draws on advanced design technologies and emerging health data regarding densities , scales and dynamics of cellular entities .
The Lab is also partnering with St Vincent ’ s Public Hospital to codesign a VR game as a non-pharmacological complement to opioid interventions in acute pain management . Featuring a little dog and a simple quest , its character-driven approach develops patient resilience and creates a compelling distraction that may help reduce opioid dependence , anxiety and distress .
Our collaboration
Funded by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Bio-Nano Science and Technology , the Lab is partnering on Nanoscape with :
> The Institute for Molecular Bioscience , the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis , and the Centre for Advanced Imaging at the University of Queensland
> And Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University .

Creative skills , such as visualisation and animation , can be re-tasked to directly impact health outcomes and quality of care in clinical settings . A lot of it boils down to story . Whether it ’ s immersive , interactive or a linear animation , storytelling provides a powerful tool for better informing patients , and the general public more broadly , about treatment and the nature of disease and other health messages , says John McGhee .
