Curating beyond disciplines creates a vibrant future for museums
The problem
More on this story
Museums influence how we understand ourselves , our society and our environment . Historically they have organised their collections and displays around knowledge disciplines , such as archaeology , natural science and fine art .
However , such disciplinary divisions are rooted in colonialism , and knowledge has changed dramatically since their formation in the 19th century , demanding new ways of collecting and sharing material culture .

Our solution
More creative and inclusive curation can help move cultural institutions beyond the discipline-centric model , says Associate Professor Lizzie Muller from UNSW ’ s School of Art & Design . The future of museums depends on embracing new ways of collaboratively shaping and sharing knowledge .
Lizzie Muller is a curator and researcher specialising in audience experience and interdisciplinary collaboration . She studies the relationship between curatorial practice , disciplinary change and museums as sites of knowledge production .
