Cranbrook Educational Community – Director of Schools – Position Statement 9
between classes allows students to travel by bus or foot between the two campuses, connect with teachers and fellow students, or just relax in the common room or Kingswood Café. The Upper School schedule is a blend of traditional fixedperiod classes and a rotating schedule with class periods of varying lengths that optimize the learning environment.
The Upper School curriculum is rich, rigorous, and college preparatory in nature with Advanced Placement offerings in most of the content areas. Students are challenged inside and outside the classroom to develop independence, individuality and problem-solving skills. As a result of the architecture and lay-out of the two campuses, the ambiance is that of a small liberal arts college in which students are given considerable independence and handle it with maturity. With so many students and teachers living on one campus or the other, the Upper School is remarkably relational and the bonds among students and between students and teachers are strong and palpable. Upper School faculty serve as advisors, mentors and coaches and know their students both inside and outside of the classroom.
