A friend told me that crocheting and knitting were equally easy, but
crocheting might be just a little easier than knitting since it only uses
one hook! So began my crocheting journey that would lead me to the
crochet coral reef.
The ease of learning crocheting was the craft’s initial attraction, but its compact size – one
hook and a small
ball of yarn – made it perfect to occupy my time during my daily
bus commute to work.
My first projects were
scarves, but living in
Phoenix, AZ, it was hard
to find people that really
needed a scarf. Next was
a crochet pattern for a
pair of slippers. Even
after following the simple
pattern so carefully
and precisely, the first
slipper was for a giant
and its mate was never
attempted.
Not ready to give up
on crocheting, an
Internet search led
to the Institute for
Figuring (IFF) and their
book A Field Guide
to Hyperbolic Space;
An Exploration of
the Intersection of
Higher Geometry and
Feminine Handicraft
by Margaret Wertheim.
