Introduction to needle felting
Techniques
Body Basic ball or egg shape.
Take a small handful of fleece, pull out the wool fibers into a long strand.
Then curl it tightly into a bundle compress the air out as you go. Place onto
a foam block. Needle the wool repeatedly with the felting needle. Make
sure you move the piece around so that all sides are worked. Check for size
more wool can be added if needed. Check for firmness and desired shape.
Sausage shape used for arms and legs.
The method is the same as for the ball shape, but you will need to form a
sausage shape, wrapping more fibres around in stages and needling it until
it is fairly firm.
Using armatures for arms and legs.
Use a wire or pipe cleaner armature, this will improve the figures structure
and stability. Wind the wool around the wire and felt with the needle,
adding more strands when needed until piece is correct shape, depth and
firmness.
For an animal form a simple skeleton with head, arms and legs.
