they bottle anything for stores, but they sell growlers. They have a lot of changing
taps, and they’re experimenting all the time. They’re doing great stuff. They’re
doing a lot of interesting sours and juicy IPAs, like the stuff that people are getting
really into. They have some really great straight up the middle standards too.
The Decemberists have been extremely successful, but probably the best sign of
your success is having been immortalized on episodes of The Simpsons and The
Family Guy. Is there any achievement you would put above that and if so be pre-
pared to explain yourself fully?
[Laughs] Yeah, it’s not anything you’d ever put on a bucket list, but it’s pretty cool.
I don’t know. I think that I’ve always approached my career in music as just try-
ing to do what I like to do, work and stay focused on making good music for good
people, and not worrying too much about what I want to get out of it. The run of
The Decemberists has been full of amazing surprises like that, and the coolest ones
come out of nowhere. Like when Parks and Rec wants you to be on something or
Stephen Colbert or being at Bonnaroo, and Mavis Staples sits in on a song. There
are just crazy moments like that that are just mindbogglingly awesome. I would
never have anticipated or expected those to happen. So that’s the most fun thing to
me when it’s just a pleasant surprise.
