Edna Lewis: At the Table With an
American Original • $28
By Sara B. Franklin
Somehow, Edna Lewis, the grand
dame of Southern cuisine is a little
known figure. This granddaughter of
a slave made a splash at New York’s,
Café Nicholson cooking for writers,
actors, and artists before breaking
onto the cookbook scene. Her second
book, The Taste of Country Cooking,
is considered one of the great works
on Southern cuisine. This collection
of essays dedicated to Lewis cele-
brates her life and the effect she had
on food writers and chefs from Fran-
cis Lam to Alice Waters. The book is
available April 13, 2018.
The Comfort Food Diaries • $26
By Emily Nunn
The Comfort Food Diaries ... who
knew drunk posting to Facebook
could have a happy ending?
When Nunn’s life fell apart, cook-
ing, friends, and facing uncom-
fortable truths helped her build
a new one. This Southern story
deserves a place among the best
food stories and the author de-
serves a seat next to the likes of
Elizabeth David and MFK Fisher.
