This simple word may be interpreted in many ways.  The basic meaning is a gift of money or other property granted by a will.  However, I prefer to think of it differently.  It could mean what someone leaves behind as their life story, their accomplishments, or their passion.    To me how someone is remembers is their legacy.  It could be the charitable works, artistic abilities, published works or the positive influence shared with others.

Gail Orcutt, an Iowa teacher, a lung cancer patient and activist, left a tremendous legacy for future generations.  She worked continually educating legislators about the necessity for schools to be tested for radioactive gas and mitigated if the results indicated elevated levels.

Many times, just as with Gail, one doesn’t live to see the results and value of their passion and toil.  After Gail’s death, yes, the Iowa legislature did pass a bill to test and mitigate schools.  The bill was named in Gail’s honor.

The creator and publisher of this free electronic magazine, and president of Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction, Inc., Jacquelyn E. Nixon, is creating a great legacy which will save lives.  Her tireless labor has created a national and international awareness of the great danger of living, working, and attending school with elevated levels of radioactive radon gas.

As a radon-induced lung cancer survivor, Jackie didn’t just sit down and accept what was.  She has been on a crusade and cannot be stopped to share her story and help prevent other lung cancer victims due to radon exposure.  Working with numerous environmentally and health- conscious groups, she has made an impact on our futures.

We take our hats off to you, Jackie.   Thank you so very much!

My recommended reading for this issue is A PASSIONATE MIND IN RELENTLESS PURSUIT The Vision of Mary McLeod Bethune by Noliwe Rooks.
