Highlights
• Concentrations of PM were monitored in 490 schools across the UK during the academic year 2023 – 2024.
• School PM concentrations closely correlated to ambient outdoor
2.5 PM2.5 concentrations.
2.5
• Outdoor air is a key source of PM in the schools monitored, an upper bound for the contribution from indoor sources is estimated to be 25 %.
• Outdoor PM events— periods of elevated outdoor PM concentration— lead to high concentrations in schools.
• The potential exposure of PM received during these events is estimated to contribute significantly to the total received over the academic year.
