REMEMBERING Susie —

A Shining Star

Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction

When looking through my treasure chest of friends, Susie Shimek’s gem radiates brightly and sparkles so brilliantly among all those other outstanding individuals whose paths I have encountered. Susie was part of the EPA’s Radon Division in DC when I met her having advanced from the Radon Program Director for the state of Tennessee.

Susie had a very sweet southern accent having grown up in Clarksville, TN, and attended Austin Peay State University. She was full of life and never met a stranger. Her passion was being with her son, Jacob, and making a difference with radon awareness, education, and prevention

of radon-induced lung cancer. Jacob accompanied her on many trips as she traveled to radon symposiums, national conferences for state legislators and radon stakeholders’ meetings.

Her warm personality and Tennessee friendliness won over many otherwise skeptics of the danger of radioactive radon gas exposure.

I loved this radiant jewel in my treasure chest of friends. Susie you are remembered kindly and with love by many for your enthusiasm for life which you shared with all.
