Chrysan Cronin, Muhlenberg Assistant Professior and Director of Public Health, has built a coalition of community stakeholders working together to advance an action plan leading to better policies in Pennsylvania such as shedding light on the need for radon testing in schools, day care centers and rental properties through collaborative work on strategies to determine effective measure that can minimize or eliminate radon-induced lung cancer. Decreasing the harmful healh effects of radon-related lung cancer can be brought about with better communication concerning state policies to protect the citizens according to Dr. Cronin.
Chrys Kelly, Coordinator of Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, has been an Environmental Protection Specialist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environmental Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division for the past 24 plus years and Radon Program Manager for over 10 years. Chrys was instrumental in securing the Radon Mitigation Assistance Program for low-income individuals in Colorado.
Julie Weisshaar, Principal Officer and Executive Director at Energy Association of Iowa Schools, School Radon Education Testing Public Relation Marketing and Community Developer, created the Radon Action Challenge in order to reach more people through social media and save more people from radon-induced lung cancer. Julie worked closely with another inspirational woman and our friend in Iowa, Gail Orcutt and now her fundraiser, Gail Orcutt’s Radon Reduction Foundation Fund. One hundred percent of the profits will go to fund low-income radon mitigations to reduce the burden of lung cancer in Iowa!
Rachel Filippini, Executive Director of Group Against Smog and Pollution, (GASP) works for a healthy sustainable environment focusing on air quality in the Pittsburgh area. She has spearheaded new Alleghany County air quality legislation and kept air pollution issues in the public eye of schools and the community. Rachel created a project to amplify voices of people in communities who have first-hand experience with the real health affects connected with poor air quality. Recently, GASP shared Jackie Nixon’s story.
