Change the outcome of radon-related lung
cancer data by adding a statement to the radon
testing request form that asks the property owner if they would like the radon test results sent to their physician.
Why Should Physicians Know About the Danger of Radioactive Radon Gas?
According to the World Health Organization radon gas
exposure can account up to 15% of the lung cancer
incidences or possibly more. The risk of lung cancer
increases by 16% for every 2.7
picocuries per liter of air increase in
long time average radon concentration. Residential radon levels can be measured in an inexpensive and simple manner. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that approximately 21,000 or more individuals (non-smokers, former smokers, or current smokers) die from radon related lung cancer. The synergy of radioactive radon gas and tobacco smoke can increase the individual’s chance of getting lung cancer by 25%.
According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the public and medical community often under-estimate the potential risk of cancer due to radon exposure. With the information that can be provided to the physicians about radon, the danger of exposure and the ease of testing, patients and the medical communities can better protect themselves from the second leading environmental cause of lung cancer mortality.
The radon test results are sent to the property owner by email and/or post office mail. At the same time, the test results could be sent to the property owner’s physician for inclusion in their medical records.
A simple disclosure statement on a form, authorized by the property owner could:
• trigger additional analysis and add value to the ability
to properly diagnose Lung Cancer.
• strengthen the process of the Early Detection of
Radon.
• improve benchmark statistics that support national
monitoring of progress towards radon-related Lung
Cancer reduction.
• possibly help save lives from this mostly unknown
killer.
