Charcon
products
reign supreme
in Leicester
Products supplied by Aggregate Industries’ commercial hard
landscaping division have helped to transform Leicester’s Greyfriars
conservation area, ahead of the city’s high profile reburial of King
Richard III.
The Charcon team was awarded the contract to specify block paving
products for the re-development of paving and walkways throughout
the area, made famous following the discovery of King Richard III in
2013. The project was part of Leicester City Council’s ongoing street
rejuvenation programme and received funding from the Heritage Lottery
Fund.
Thanks to its rich industrial heritage, paving within Leicester’s city centre
traditionally used Leicestershire granite, which, with predominantly
brick buildings, provides a blend of warm reds, pinks and charcoals.
The Highways team of Leicester City Council was keen to replicate
this colour palette throughout The Lanes and St Martin’s Square, with
a series of high quality, durable colour matched block paving products,
which would offer aesthetic value and longevity in equal measure.
Working closely with the landscape planners and engineers at Leicester
City Council, the Charcon team created three bespoke products, which
preferably matched the existing specification and particular colour
scheme.
In total, 6672m2 of Charcon Andover Textured premium precast
concrete paving was supplied in three new shades; Washed Pink
Granite, Washed Heather Porphyry and Washed Tuscan Porphyry. The
bespoke products were delivered in various configurations, comprising
different quantities of each colour to create a unique, high quality look
which complimented the feel of the area and wider city street-scene.
To complete the scheme, Charcon supplied an additional 400m2
of Vianova in Anthracite Charcoal shade, a contemporary polished
paving, which was laid in a linear format to act as a guidance strip for
pedestrians.
Mike Davies, Major Projects & Specifications Manager at Aggregate
Industries, said: “This has been a hugely exciting project to work on,
with this particular area the focus of so much recent media interest.
