Building Services The Classroom Challenge: Having already produced a class-leading Passive Ventilation system, the question was asked, “Can a specialised unit be produced to provide high performance heat-recovery ventilation for classrooms?” The challenge was to produce a unit to fit within the typical restraints of a ‘tight’ false-ceiling while supplying and exhausting a minimum of 260I/s at an acceptable sound level to satisfy BB93 and with a target SFP of ≤ 0.9W/I/s. This is 45% less energy use than the current maximum SFP allowable of 1.6W/I/s (Government directive 2013) and therefore helps with achieving building compliance. A further objective was to enable the unit to be turned-down by, at least, 50% air volume without the risk of the heat exchanger going into a laminar-flow condition where no heat-transfer would take place. Enter the ‘Classmaster®’. With a casting height of only 300mm, Classmaster delivers the required airflow for a typical classroom with the ability to be turned down in 25% steps plus a summer bypass ‘boost’ setting of up to 300I/s to combat over-heating. Fully compliant with BB93 & 101, with a ‘trickle’ & ‘duty’ speed SFP of 0.88W/I/s, (0.44 per fan), and being fitted with G4, very low maintenance filters, Classmaster can operate via time clock or BMS signal, CO2 sensor, temperature sensor and PIR with frost protection, automatic summer bypass, night cooling and manual override all being standard options in the ‘Eco-Pro©’ control system. The very low energy EC motors fitted are rated for 100,000 hours operation and the filter maintenance period, under normal operating conditions is up to 18 months.
