Structural Repair
Slab strengthening
for service
penetrations
An office conversion in picturesque Kingston
Upon Thames is one of the latest projects for
Fibrwrap Construction UK. The five storey
building a 1960’s office block has been
predominantly used as open plan office space
since construction is now being converted into a
Five storey Hotel. The head height between the
finish floor level and the underside of the slab
is extremely tight for the services that would
go into a modern day hotel. With bathrooms in
each bedroom and a kitchen/restaurant on the
lower floor there are a lot of pipes, drains and
ventilation ducts that need to pass through the
slabs.
Normally when cutting a reasonable sized
hole through a slab you will need to provide
temporary propping support while the hole is
being cut. Then after the hole is cut you may
need to add additional steel support to transfer
the loads back to existing beams and columns.
It is possible for all this to be omitted with the
use of Tyfo Fibrwrap Systems.
Following analysis Fibrwrap UK will design a
solution with Tyfo Fibrwrap Systems that will
redistribute the loads
caused by the cutting
of any reinforcement.
The application of Tyfo
Fibrwrap Systems in most
cases can be carried
out prior to the cutting
and subsequently can
eliminate the need for
temporary works. Subject
to the analysis the system can immediately
take any distributed load as soon as the
reinforcement is cut and Fibrwrap Systems are
normally only 1mm thick.
The application is very quick and non
disruptive, it will not have any adverse effect
on the surrounding structure or works and is
therefore an extremely cost effective method for
strengthening in all manners of engineering.
Fibrwrap Systems in Building refurbishment can
also be used for strengthening slabs for positive
and negative moments, column strengthening
for additional or replacement axial loading and
beam strengthening for flexure and shear.

Mapei provide concrete
strengthening solutions
Having problems with leaking structures?
Mapei - the world’s leading
manufacturer of adhesive
and chemical products for the
construction industry provide
solutions to help strengthen
new of existing building
structures.
Fibre composite strengthening
provides a cost effective
technique, which can bring
great benefits to the owners
of various buildings, primarily
because of the speed of
installation, leading to less
disruption.
Mapei’s MapeWrap are unidirectional continuous carbon
fibre fabrics charcterised
by high and very high
modulus of elasticity and
high tensile strength. The
fabrics are suitable for
repairing reinforced concrete
stuctures damaged by
physical-mechanical action or
concrete elements subjected
to compressive and bending
stress. Carboplate is a range
of pultrused carbon fibre
plates, with high resistance
and flexibility, for plating prestressed reinforced concrete
and steel structures.
H20x - Oxford Hydrotechnics is an
innovative company specialising
in advanced resin injection and
grouting techniques. Our core
services include Leak Sealing,
Ground Stabilisation, Structural
Reinforcing and Concrete Repairs.
In addition to a comprehensive
training programme in ‘A Guide
to Concrete Repair’, Mapei
offers the following: ‘Avoiding
Ceramic Failures’, ‘Effective
Waterproofing’, ‘Epoxy Resin
& Cementitious Flooring’,
‘Fast Track Screeds’, ‘Subfloor
Preparation’, and ‘Render
Protected External Wall
Insulation’ (EWI).
We control water issues in
structures including tunnels, car
parks, basements, manholes,
colverts, bridges, reservoirs,
sewers, roads and canals. Our
polyurethane resin has been
developed to control water ingress
from slight trickles to heavy flows
with each project being individually
assessed to obtain best results.
Our teams are experienced in all
aspects of leak sealing, ground
stabilisation and concrete repairs.
