New Klober
CPD on BS 5534
Technical brochure
accompanies updated
presentation
With the ever increasing demands of the Building Regs and Standards,
technical support for construction materials is in great demand. Changes
to BS 5534 ‘Code of Practice for slating and tiling’ will have a major impact
on roofing design and installation as well as on specific products such
as underlays and dry fixing accessories. Klober will, therefore, shortly be
introducing a CPD presentation explaining the full implications.
The biggest change relates to single lap tiles, as every tile will now need
to be fully fixed with either a clip or nail. This has been prompted by an
updated UK wind zone map, the influence of which is also reflected in
the wind zone limitation being required on underlay packaging. Cheaper
membranes have suffered from ‘ballooning’ causing tiles to lift, in contrast
to an air-open underlay such as Permo® air which exceeds the minimum
wind uplift resistance and can be used in zones 1-3, and all zones
when taped.
Klober has been at the forefront of developments in pitched roofing
accessories and has built up trust amongst specifiers over many
years. Architect Neil Oakley of Danks Badnell Architects put this in
perspective saying, “We specified
Klober airtightness accessories as
they provide a complete package,
from underlays and vapour barriers
to dry fixing accessories, tapes and
sealants for laps and penetrations.
They appear to have led the market
with these key products, enabling
us to achieve the high standard of
performance we require”.
To address the problem of mortar-related claims under the NHBC
Buildmark Warranty, dry fixing using product such as Klober Roll-Fix®,
is considered to be best practice. Mortar can still be used, but ridges,
hips and verges must now be supported by mechanical means. Specific
emphasis is placed on use of correct material ratios in mortar as
complaints had highlighted regular instances of poor quality.
A six month co-existence period with the old Standard lapses on 28th
February. Meanwhile, Klober has been working alongside the NFRC to
provide courses free to members explaining how it will impact on them.
All have been fully subscribed and will continue until March when the
CPD presentation becomes available.
The CPD presentation ‘Control of air leakage in roofs’ has also been
updated and a new brochure produced to show how airtightness
accessories can affect SAP ratings.
