Superquilt External Wall Insulation
YBS Insulation developed Superquilt multifoil insulation initially for use in loft conversions
where it has been used for many years to keep those bedrooms, work spaces and play areas
warm in the winter and cool during the summer whilst not taking up too much valuable space.
Over time, the product has evolved to face the ever-increasing challenges of Part L and the
demand for Superquilt to be used in myriad applications.
Knowsley Housing Trust
In 2011, YBS Insulation embarked on a project as part of a team sent up by Knowsley Housing
Trust; a pilot scheme to improve a locally typical terrace of three mid twentieth Century homes
which had previously had loft & cavity wall insulation, double glazing and gas central heating
installed, however, despite these measures, the tenants advised that their homes were still
cold, draughty and expensive to heat.
As part of Knowsley Housing Trust’s target to reduce CO2 emissions within its housing stock,
the idea was conceived to externally ‘wrap’ the three properties with Superquilt creating an
airtight barrier in combination with external cladding and render to produce an improved local
living environment. This was a new application for any multifoil and by insulating externally,
it meant minimal impact for the occupants who could remain within the dwelling whilst works
were carried out.
Along with other measures installed by the team, upon completion, air tightness had improved
from 10.7 air changes per hour to 4.2; a reduction in air loss of 61%!
This all led to the project being awarded the WWF Green Game-Changers
Innovation of the Year award 2012 at the businessGreen leaders awards and
to Knowsley Housing Trust rolling it out to other types where air tightness has
been reduced even further and monitoring has shown that dramatic energy
savings are being realised.
Since completion of the initial phase, Superquilt has been Agrement certified
for use externally on walls to the new standard EN16012 (determination of
thermal performance of reflective insulation) and is accepted by LABC, STAS
and NHBC. Other applications covered under this new standard include
Timber Frame, Dry Lining and Roofs; installed internally and externally.
