HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear CPA Community ,
Reflecting on this past school year , I have seen uncertainty and hardship unfolding simultaneously alongside growth , beauty , resilience , and ultimately courage . Each one of us has faced difficulty and loss in the last 24 months . And through that , each of us has been given the opportunity to reorient ourselves to what is true , identifying an anchor to root us in high tides . We as a school community have taken this opportunity to strengthen our roots , giving us clarity of purpose , and the courage to pursue our mission fully and freely .
Courage can be defined as “ full-hearted participation ,” and this full-hearted participation has permeated the landscape of 2021-22 at the Academy . This courage was found on every corner of campus this year . A journalism student carefully proofreading the final edits of the yearbook before sending it to the publisher . A senior picking up trash on the quad unprompted after a full day at Clash of the Tartans . A third grader anxiously waiting to deliver his presentation to family and friends at the Living History Museum . An eighth grader and his classmates silently taking in the somber weight of Vietnam Veterans Memorial in D . C . A preschooler trying again and again to write her numbers and letters without help . A football player knowing he is still loved and valued just as much as before the final whistle of a lost Championship game . A fourth grader nailing her part as the only lower school student in the upper school musical after weeks of rehearsals . A crowd of veterans at Baccalaureate surrounding a graduating senior and future service member to cover him in prayers of protection . A campus discussing feelings and how important it is to know them , learn from them , and live more fully because of them .
These scenes are markers of courage — full-hearted participation , unfettered by the fear of ridicule or defeat , even when no one is watching . It is not always flashy . It is often mundane . But it is always important . And so we start a new year with fresh faces , reteaching ourselves this courage , calling it out of our peers , spurring moments of holy transformation at CPA .
Thank you for your contributions to an amazing year at CPA . I have learned so much from students , families , and faculty this year , and I look forward to what lies ahead ! Thank you ,
