Senior Research Symposium
T he Senior Research Symposium provides an avenue for upper school students who are gifted in Science and wish to pursue a STEM career to perform research , pursue research publishing , and build their college resumes . Students design an experiment of their choosing , conduct the experiment , analyze the data , and present their findings in written and presentation format at a symposium held in the Lumen Library .
This year , research students Lukas Jackson , Abby Robeson , Cora Beasley , and Jordan Paschall focused on timely issues such as Alzheimer ’ s , diabetes , and “ forever chemicals .”
Throughout their work , students learned that Science is not always neat and tidy , nor does it always provide answers ; sometimes it presents more questions . It is within those new questions that true learning begins . Research
Instructor Amber Romaine shares , “ Students had to reassess their initial hypotheses and think quickly on their feet as they faced problems in their experimental design they had not predicted . They had to delve deeper into unexpected results and research potential reasons for what they saw . They also had the chance to reflect on the year and think about what they would have done differently if given the opportunity .”
Students formally presented their findings at the annual Research Symposium
