BASEBALL
After finishing fourth in the district tournament and coming back the following week to win the region tournament , CPA Baseball entered the Division II-A State Tournament on May 25 with work to do and a hunger to win . The team defeated Northpoint Christian 7-5 and Christian Academy of Knoxville 3-2 to reach the championship game of the double elimination tournament on Thursday , and faced Northpoint again in the final . The team started off strong , jumping out to a 5-0 after three innings , only to watch Northpoint take a 6-5 lead midway through the fifth . The Lions put two on the board in the bottom half of the fifth and added five more in the sixth . Down but not out , Northpoint cut the lead to 12-11 and loaded up the bases before the final out which secured the exciting win for the state championship . This was the second state championship for both the program and Head Coach Larry Nesbitt .
Larry attributes a mid-season , players-only meeting where the team buckled down with a “ we over me ” mentality and set its sights high on the State Championship . “ It ’ s neat that they got to experience what it ’ s like to be part of a true team . They got to end their season on a win , and they deserve it ,” Larry said in his post-game interview with Main Street Prep ’ s Russell Vannozzi .
