from The White House or the football field , and it makes me excited to pursue my own interests in media ,” says Caroline .
Serving as Director of Photography for the TV and Cinema class for his second year is sophomore Logan Reid . Logan ’ s technical skill and camera work is remarkable for a student his age . Camera work first caught his attention in middle school after he took a photo-journalism class . From there , he acquired a camera and gradually taught himself different editing softwares , enjoying the fun of special effects , trying new angles , and attending every one of Michael ’ s filmmaking summer camps .
“ Logan is one of the most talented students I have ever had in this program . His art is making a scene look beautiful through the eye of his camera , and his appreciation for the process of getting the right shot is advanced beyond his years ,” says Michael .
Logan enjoys the fresh challenge of each new take : “ I think it ’ s interesting that no one take is the same , so you have to get creative , problem-solve , and adjust to a variety of challenges . I ’ m impressed by the cinematography of one-take pieces , like the film 1917 . It ’ s incredible what they ’ re able to do with that single take .”
Michael attests to Logan ’ s abilities in this year ’ s production of the Auld Lang Syne music video , a piece filmed at the height of the pandemic . Students were spaced dozens of feet apart in the new theatre , completely stationary to maintain distance , and Logan created a cohesive viewer experience despite it all . This piece earned Logan and his classmates an Emmy for Best Music Video . The THSPA also awarded Logan first place for Best Videographer .
One aspect of the media program at CPA involves learning the art of the interview . For their various broadcast projects , students often travel to organizations to learn about a professional field from industry experts , or host guests in their studio on campus . Students have traveled to the Titans Stadium , Braves Stadium , Bridgestone Arena , Music Row , Grand Ole Opry , The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation , Pinewood Studios , radio labs , and news stations . Whether interviewing White House press correspondent Greg Clugston , or songwriter and music producer Ashley Gorely , Michael ’ s classes practice their conversational acumen , developing engaging questions , learning how to think quickly in a live setting , and getting to the heart of the narrative – essential qualities for whatever professional career students pursue .
Leadership roles have already been filled for the 2021-22 school year . Michael enjoys seeing natural gifts and talents surface as students take the opportunity to step up in new ways .
