COWES PORT HANDBOOK 2014 - 2015 Finding a Balance ....................... One of the big challenges of estuary management is to ensure a balance between the quality of the natural and historic environment and its use for our activities. Sometimes this balance can only be achieved by adapting our activities and undertaking proactive work to support natural habitats. Cowes Harbour Commission is a key partner in the Isle of Wight Estuaries Project and through this partnership will be working with a wide range of interests around the Medina Estuary. There are lots of exciting projects planned for 2014, which aim to support and enhance the estuary’s important habitats and wildlife. These include habitat management and improvements to access and interpretation along the eastern bank of the estuary. Recreational activity, development and natural change, such as sea level rise and increased flooding can often cause pressure on the estuary, but by taking an active role in adaptation the impact can be minimised in a sustainable way. Cowes Harbour Commission has supported the Isle of Wight Estuaries Project for over 14 years and is keen to ensure that the Medina Estuary continues to be an attractive and vibrant place to live and visit. The Isle of Wight Estuaries Project is a partnership between Cowes Harbour Commission, Environment Agency, Isle of Wight Council, Natural England and Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners. COWES.co.uk 71
