Masks for the Public?

Provider Health

As we try to jumpstart our lives again, many are asking how to do this safely. We already know a key answer: mask, mask, mask.

Recent literature suggests that if 80% of the population were to adopt universal mask wearing, a major second epidemic wave of COVID-19 could be prevented while simultaneously allowing the economy to safely re-open.

The CDC has recommended wearing cloth face coverings in public settings since April 3, 2020. They recommend cloth face coverings for the public so that surgical and N95 masks can be prioritized for healthcare workers and other medical first responders. While the CDC provides some general suggestions regarding qualities these masks should have (fit snugly, secure with ties or ear loops, include multiple layers of fabric, allow for breathing without restriction, be able to be washed and dried without damage) - there are no suggestions regarding what masks may be most effective. Meanwhile, different versions of cloth masks have flooded the market.
