A career in fashion design is far too
often abased or underrated in a
world where youth are pre destined
to become doctors, lawyers,
scientists or engineers and although
every country is undoubtedly host to
an official annual fashion week,
South African Islamic designers are
courageously stepping out of the
shadows and on to the runway,
showcasing their incredible designs
for Muslim women of all ages.
The weekend of 13th – 14th May
2017 marked a first time ever Hijab
Fashion Week in the city of
Johannesburg whereby modest wear
designers including Red Ruby,
Ruhee, Ajmaan, My Online Souk,
StyleExplora and Fabulous In Hijab
amongst others amalgamated after
the conceptualization of Cape
Town's 'Fabulous in Hijab' designer,
Abashiya’s ‘Hijab Fashion Week
SA.’
As we chatted to designer Armani of
Ruhee on day two, we gathered that
although competition is tight in the field
of fashion, their collection is designed to
suit every requirement of a Muslimah;
from the casual and funky look to the
more elegant style.
Audience applauded the astounding talents
of sister designers; Jehaan and Sabeena at
My Online Souk who showcased a
versatile range of inspiring modest wear
while proving that the possibilities of a
strong sisterhood bond are endless.
