National Qualifications In most cases pupils will be in S4, S5 and S6 when they study for the new qualifications. There are changes in the way such courses are being assessed Formally from 2017. Courses are made up of units and at National 4 the course comprises of units and anβ added value assessment β. Individual subjects at Access and National 4 levels will not be graded but marked overall by a pass or fail. These levels will not have external exams At National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher, the β added value β will be assessed in the course assessment. The purpose of the course assessment is to assess added value of the course as well as confirm attainment in the course and to provide a grade A to D. If a candidate receives a band 8 or 9( No Award) in the National 5 Course external assessment, but passed all the internally assessed units at National 5 SQA will create a National 4 entry and the school will request an updated certificate.. The question papers will be set and marked annually by SQA( Scottish Qualifications Authority). Robust quality assurance procedures will ensure that all assessments are fair, consistent and continue to meet national standards.
