COURSE: Modern Languages: French / German Introductory Statement Learning other languages enables young people to develop an understanding of and make connections with other cultures and people. This will enhance opportunities to play a more active, successful part as global citizens and in the world of work.
The continuation of the modern language is strongly recommended for almost all pupils in recent educational guidelines. Pupils are expected to continue their studies in this important curricular area, but the Modern Languages Department will be happy to advise in each individual case if this route would be best suited to your daughter’ s / son’ s strengths and abilities.
Aims & Objectives Our courses are designed to broaden horizons, encourage the acquisition of another language and explore the cultural backgrounds associated with this language. This will help equip our young people with valuable linguistic and cultural knowledge as well as a better understanding of their own language and culture. Through a range of content relevant to various contexts- including the world of work- learners will be better prepared to play a full and active part in a modern, open society.
Course Content Our S3 / 4 language courses are topic-based and cover a wide range of themes building on S1 / 2 content, but extending range and challenge further towards proficiency. Topics covered include school, free time, home area, shopping, holidays and travel, future plans etc.
New course outlines have resulted in up-to-date, relevant courses including new opportunities for more project-based based work, whilst still delivering valuable, soughtafter qualifications leading up to Higher.
Skills Developed Our courses are designed to further develop linguistic skills in Listening and Talking as well as Reading and Writing. This is with the aim to equip our pupils to communicate in the foreign language in a wide range of realistic, varied situations.
Assessment Pupil work will be continually assessed in a variety of ways and feedback on progress will be shared throughout S3 and S4. Continuous assessment of classwork and unit test scores will be used by teachers to ensure pupils are embarking upon the correct level as they enter the Senior Phase in S4. Pupils will be involved in formal SQA assessments which may involve exams, project work, or a combination of both, depending upon the subject and level of study.
Progression Routes Pupils will progress towards „ National 4 ‟ / „ National 5 ‟ depending upon progress made throughout S3. They will then be formally presented at this level at the end of S4. Pupils may return to school into S5 and S6 where they can progress to Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications.
