Progression Opportunities into Higher Education
The Higher Education Links Scheme ( HELS ) systematically links named Further Education and Training ( FET ) awards at levels five and six of the National Framework of Qualifications ( NFQ ) to a variety of 3rd level courses in participating higher education institutions .
Almost 20 % of all applicants to higher education through the Central Applications Office ( CAO ) have a named NFQ level five or six FET award . Both the range of opportunities for learners and the numbers applying to higher education programmes grow each year .
Many learners have achieved minor awards while working towards a major award over an extended period of time . Existing relevant minor awards are considered eligible towards QQI certification . However , it should be noted that older modules ( i . e . those using a numbering system for a period of up to five years from the date of first certification ( i . e . the date the first award is issued ).
Learners who have completed a number of component awards at various levels are advised to bear this currency of five years in mind when planning their learning journey . If a component award is outside this five-year window , QQI will not consider it as counting towards a major award .
If you want to work towards a major award , you should discuss this with Kildare FETC centre staff , and ensure that a manageable timetable of awards is available to meet your specific needs .
Please also remember that if we do not offer the course you need , it may be available in one of the other FET ’ s within KWETB . Also remember that the electives we offer are only a sampling of possible components ; viable alternatives may be available — you should check the offerings available on www . kwetb . ie or at other local centres .
