It’s good to give these interns different work experiences because if they did not like their assignment, they still had plenty of time to find something else that sparks their interest.

“This summer I was fortunate enough to be exposed to such a diverse, intricate, and intuitive environment that broadened my perspective and helped me overcome my timidness,” Samantha Ruvalcaba told parents and interns at the SA Works Summer Job Celebration. She was one of two Bexar County interns selected to speak at the event through an application process.

One common answer when asked why students applied for the internship was their interest in business, and yet they found government internship work compelling.

“This internship has opened my eyes to see the many aspects of the business world,” said Bexar Heritage and Parks intern Ruben Jimenez, who plans to major in business at Texas A&M University.

The County looks forward to next summer’s new ambitious high school interns to follow. Judge Wolff wants to grow the program to allow the County to continue assisting the future workforce by giving young students the experience they need to be successful.

"I want to thank the departments that participated this summer and I hope we are able to expand the program next year," County Judge Nelson Wolff said. "All the responses I've received from supervisors and interns have been positive, so I encourage more departments to take advantage of this program next summer."
