n an overcast Wednesday
in June, two dozen law
enforcement officers gathered in
Chilton County for training. News out
of the nation’s capital that morning had
been grim, with a congressman shot
at softball practice and injuries to the
security detail too.
But before the instructor led them
in reviewing dash camera footage
or talked through statistics about the
dangers of their work, they heard a
bagpipe version of “Amazing Grace”
while seeing images of funeral services
for fallen officers.
